7 Mistakes Clients Make in the First Week After PMU (And How to Avoid Them)

Your new semi-permanent makeup is an investment in your daily confidence. The first seven days after your eyebrow or lip PMU procedure are the most critical for the final outcome. This initial healing phase determines how well the pigment settles, how crisp the lines remain, and how vibrant the color looks for the years to follow. As a Pharmesthetic-certified PMU artist serving Duluth, Suwanee, Buford, and the greater Atlanta area, I see a few common, well-intentioned mistakes that can compromise your beautiful results. Let’s walk through them so you can confidently navigate your healing journey.

1. Not Respecting the Sun

The fresh micro-channels in your skin are vulnerable. Sun exposure is not just about discomfort. It’s about causing hyperpigmentation, fading the color unevenly, or even triggering inflammation that alters the healed shape.

The Fix

For the first full week, avoid direct sun exposure completely. If you must go outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat. After the initial week, diligent, broad-spectrum sunscreen application (once the area is fully healed and no longer sensitive) becomes your lifelong best practice to maintain color.

FROM THE STUDIO: Sun protection is a non-negotiable part of your PMU aftercare. We include detailed guidelines in our post-care kit, and I’m always available for questions via our contact page.

2. Letting Sweat Interrupt Healing

For our clients in Atlanta, Suwanee, and Johns Creek, active lifestyles are common. Sweat contains salts and minerals that can seep into the healing skin, causing irritation, pigment migration, or even infection.

The Fix

Take a full 7-day break from activities that induce sweating: intense gym sessions, hot yoga, running, etc. Light walks are fine, but listen to your body. Keep the area dry and cool.

3. Introducing Outside Products

Your healing skin needs a clean, simple environment. Introducing makeup, skincare, or even certain cleansers can introduce bacteria, cause allergic reactions, or create a barrier that prevents proper healing.

The Fix

Use only the gentle, recommended cleanser and the aftercare ointment (if prescribed) provided by your artist. Avoid all makeup on the treated area. Do not use your regular facial scrubs, acids, or retinols near the area until healing is complete, which I confirm at your follow-up.

4. Scratching or Touching the Area

It’s natural to feel some itching or tightness as the skin heals. Physically scratching or picking, however, can literally remove pigment from the channels, leading to patchy results or scarring.

The Fix

If itching occurs, gently tap the area with a clean fingertip. Keep your hands clean and your mind occupied. Remember, this phase is temporary, and protecting the surface is key to long-term satisfaction.

5. Sleeping on the Treated Area

Pressure from sleeping directly on your new eyebrows or lips can cause asymmetric healing, pressure-induced fading, or even transfer of pigment to your bedding (and then back into the skin in unwanted ways).

The Fix

Try to sleep on your back for the first few nights. If you’re a side sleeper, use a clean, smooth pillowcase and be mindful of your position.

HEALING SUPPORT: The first week requires a little extra mindfulness, but it’s straightforward with a plan. For more on our approach and the Pharmesthetic Superjection method, visit our about page.

6. Misunderstanding the Healing Process

Clients sometimes worry when they see temporary darkening, slight swelling, or the formation of fine scabs. These are normal stages of healing. Overreacting by applying extra products or trying to “fix” it can disrupt the process.

The Fix

Trust the process outlined in your aftercare instructions. The color will soften and settle. Minor swelling subsides quickly. Fine scabs will flake off naturally. Do not assist them. If you have genuine concerns, reach out to me directly instead of taking action.

7. Skipping the Follow-Up Appointment

Your follow-up appointment, typically scheduled 4-6 weeks after your initial procedure, is not optional. It’s where I assess how your skin has retained the pigment, make any necessary perfecting touches, and ensure your result is balanced and long-lasting.

The Fix

Book and prioritize your follow-up. This session is included in your initial procedure fee at Aura Beauty and is essential for the final, perfected look. You can easily schedule it via our booking portal.
